Shot a whole roll on my phone's meter app, then 1 roll with the busted needle meter from a yard sale and the old one won

The app kept telling me f/8 in the shade of the elm out back, but every frame came back muddy and flat, while the cheap yard sale meter somehow nailed the porch shots at f/5.6. My buddy says I'm just bad at aiming the app at the right patch of grass, so maybe it's me and not the meter? Anyone else find an old dumb tool beats the fancy one?
