That moment I realized my film advance lever was broken halfway through a roll

I drove 45 minutes to Secret Beach in Oregon last month, set up my Pentax K1000 on a tripod at sunrise, and took 12 careful shots of the fog rolling over the cliffs. Then the advance lever just went limp. No resistance, no click, nothing. I sat there for 20 minutes trying to figure out if I could fix it without opening the camera. Ended up having to sacrifice the whole roll by opening the back in a changing bag at home. Has anyone else had a camera fail mid roll and had to decide whether to trash the shots or try a risky repair?

Oregon has some great spots but Secret Beach is actually in California, near Brookings.
