That old camera shop guy told me to skip the UV filter - big mistake with my Pentax K1000

I took his advice and went without one, and 2 weeks later at the state fair a kid's sticky cotton candy splattered right on the lens. Has anyone else had an old timer steer you wrong on basic gear protection?

Wow, I gotta push back on this one. I've been shooting with a K1000 for years and never use UV filters because they degrade image quality with extra glass. That cotton candy thing is bad luck, sure, but a lens hood or just keeping the cap on between shots would have stopped it too. I'd rather risk a rare spill than put a cheap filter on every single lens.

Learned that lesson myself when I fogged up a lens with my own breath trying to clean it.
