The film camera my dad gave me in 2007 finally failed at a wedding last month

So I shot weddings on and off for a few extra bucks until about 2011, but kept my old Canon AE-1 for personal stuff because my dad handed it down when I turned 16. Last month I brought it to my cousin's wedding in Portland, thinking I'd grab some candid shots on the dance floor. The shutter started sticking after the second roll, and by the third one it just died mid-frame, like the mirror got tired. I took it to a repair shop and the guy said the foam bumpers had basically turned to goo, and the light seals were gone too. He quoted me $180 to fix it, which is more than I paid for any used body I've owned since. It made me think about how we treat gear that has history, I almost just tossed it in a drawer and bought a $50 point and shoot from the 90s. Has anyone else had a sentimental camera break and had to decide between fixing it or letting it retire for good?
