The same lake at 6am vs 6pm, same roll of Portra 400

I shot two frames of Mirror Lake in upstate New York on one roll, one at sunrise and one right before sunset, same spot on the dock. The morning shot came out soft and blue with mist, the evening one had this deep orange glow hitting the reeds. What causes the biggest difference for you guys, the light direction or the temperature of the day?
