Finally noticed everyone misusing 'plot armor' in my group chat

I spent 2 hours last night reading rants where people called a character having basic survival skills 'plot armor' and it drove me up a wall. One dude said a trained fighter dodging a single punch was unrealistic and I had to step away from my phone. Has anyone else noticed this term getting thrown around for anything that doesn't go the way they want?

That's the thing though, people forget that real life has plot armor. I got jumped outside a 7-Eleven in 2019 and the guy's punch literally hit my phone in my front pocket and broke his hand. By their logic I had 'smartphone armor' protecting me from realism.

People just confuse "plot armor" with "things going slightly in a character's favor." Real life has random luck too, like that guy breaking his hand on your phone. But in stories, plot armor is when the writer bends reality so hard that consequences don't matter anymore. Like when a character survives a fall that should kill them just because the script says so. That's way different than a trained fighter dodging one punch or someone getting lucky with a phone in their pocket.
