Unpopular opinion: the Crunchyroll queue system actually got worse after the redesign

I tried to binge watch a show last Friday night and the queue kept reverting to episode 1 after episode 3 played. Three times in a row the same thing happened. I ended up just giving up and watching something on Netflix instead. Has anyone else had their queue just break like that lately?

Finally watched the sub over the dub for a whole series and it clicked this time

I've always been a dub guy for years, tried a few times to watch subs but gave up after a few episodes. Last month I decided to stick with the sub for an entire 26 episode show and man, the emotions hit way harder. The voice acting just felt more real, especially in the quiet scenes. Has anyone else had that moment where sub suddenly just works for you?

Why does nobody talk about the cost of streaming services adding up for anime?

I dropped like $60 last month just on Crunchyroll, Hidive, and Netflix to keep up with seasonal shows and classics. That's almost what I spend on a good dinner for two, and half the time I'm scrolling more than watching. I get that they gotta pay for licenses and simuldubs but dang, it adds up quick when you want to watch more than just whatever is on one platform. I've tried sticking to just one service but then I miss out on shows that are exclusive elsewhere. Has anyone found a good way to rotate subscriptions or some kinda budget trick to not miss the stuff you care about?

Question about sub vs dub timing in fight scenes

I've been noticing something in the last few months when I rewatch Naruto with friends. The dub version seems to have fights that last longer because the voice actors pause between lines. But the sub version has quicker back and forth during the same scenes. I timed it on the Sasuke vs Itachi fight from episode 138. The dub took 3 minutes and 22 seconds for the dialogue part. The sub did it in 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Does the extra time in the dub hurt the pacing or help build tension? I think it throws off the rhythm for me. Has anyone else noticed this difference between sub and dub timing on specific episodes?

Found a trick for getting past crunchy subs in older releases

I was watching a 2005 encode of Eureka Seven and the subtitles were so bad I almost gave up. Tried VLC's subtitle sync but the timing was all over the place. Then I found out you can just download a newer .ass file from a fansub archive and it fixed everything in like 2 minutes. The old release had really good video quality so I didn't want to ditch it. Has anyone else had luck mixing old raws with modern sub tracks?

Can we talk about how Durarara actually holds up on a rewatch

I was super skeptical when my friend told me Durarara was still good 10 years later because I remembered it being confusing and slow. Started a rewatch last month and the way all those side stories connect in the first 12 episodes is honestly way tighter than I gave it credit for. Has anyone else gone back to a show they wrote off and completely changed their mind?

That 2007 Otakon panel that broke my brain about slice-of-life anime

I was sitting in a stuffy panel room at Otakon 2007, maybe 200 people crammed in there, and a guy named Ken from some fansub group started talking about how Aria The Animation was secretly deep. I'd always written off slice-of-life as boring filler, you know? But he showed this one scene where the characters just drink tea for 3 minutes and pointed out all the background details and pacing tricks. It totally flipped how I watch shows now. Anybody else have a random convention moment that rewired your taste?

Finally binge-watched Steins;Gate in one weekend and it hit way harder than I expected

So I had this whole Saturday free and decided to finally start Steins;Gate around 10am. By 2am Sunday I had finished all 24 episodes plus the OVA. The slow burn in the first half almost made me quit, but once Okabe started jumping timelines I could not stop. I literally had to pause during episode 22 to process what just happened. Anyone else have that one show they put off for years only to have it wreck them emotionally?

I was looking for a specific anime from the early 2000s that never got an official release, you know, one of those obscure OVAs. For weeks I was digging through dead torrent links and empty fan sites, getting nowhere. Then I remembered that old forums back then used to have sticky posts with group recommendation lists. I found a cached version of a 2004 AnimeSuki thread that had a whole breakdown of which sub groups had the best translation quality. Turns out, searching for "[group name] comparison" plus the year narrows it down way better than just the show title. I finally grabbed the episodes from a Mirc server that was still active, believe it or not. Has anyone else had luck pulling old releases from those ancient IRC channels?

I finally watched Death Note after years of hearing about it

Bought the whole box set for $80 because everyone said it was a must watch. Got through maybe 12 episodes before I realized the whole thing is just a chess match between two guys who talk to each other through a TV. That's it. That's the whole show. I kept waiting for something actually exciting to happen. Now I have a $80 paperweight on my shelf. Anyone else feel like they oversold this series?

Was totally against the whole "sub vs dub" debate until I tried watching Attack on Titan in English

I've been a sub only guy for like 15 years. Always thought dubs sounded flat and lost all the emotion. But my buddy kept pushing me to try the AoT dub because he said the voice actor for Eren was actually really good. I rolled my eyes but gave in during a long car ride. Ended up binging 3 episodes straight. The casting was way better than I expected. The scout regiment voices actually fit. Still won't watch most stuff dubbed but that one changed my mind on it. Anyone else have a show that flipped their opinion on something?

After my friend kept pushing Evangelion on me for months I finally gave in last weekend and binged the first 10 episodes and now I get why everyone talks about it, but does the third act actually hold up or does it fall apart like everyone says?

Realized I was skipping the wrong intro sequences on Crunchyroll

I've been watching anime for like 5 years and always skipped every intro. Then last month I was watching Frieren and accidentally let the first intro play. That song and the visuals actually set up the whole mood of the episodes. Now I force myself to watch at least the first intro of any new series I start. It sounds dumb but it changed how I get into a show. Anyone else have a habit they changed that actually improved their watching experience?

Still think Attack on Titan got worse after season 3

Last week I rewatched the whole series and honestly, the political stuff in season 4 just dragged on forever. Everyone says it's genius writing but I found myself checking my phone during half of those Marley episodes. Am I the only one who preferred the simpler titan-killing days?

Stumbled onto a 15 year old fansub group that's still active

Remembering a random convo about anime fan subs in a college library

This was maybe eight years ago, I was sitting in the university library working on a paper. The guy at the next table saw I had a Neon Genesis Evangelion sticker on my laptop and just started talking. He said he used to trade VHS tapes with people online to get episodes of shows that weren't out here yet, and he described the weird, hand-typed subtitles that would sometimes scroll too fast or have jokes in them. He told me, 'The best part was the little translator notes in the top corner, explaining a pun or some cultural thing. You felt like you were in on a secret.' That whole scene is just gone now with everything being on streaming services day one. It was a different way to connect with a show, flaws and all. Does anyone else miss that kind of messy, personal touch, or is it just me being old?

Question about figuring out the watch order for a show with a weird timeline

I wanted to watch the Monogatari series, but the timeline is a total mess. I spent 3 hours last night just looking at different watch order charts online. One site said to watch by release date, another said to follow the novel order, and a third had a totally mixed up list. I finally just went with the novel order after reading a long Reddit thread. Has anyone else had this problem with a show that jumps around in time?

My little cousin called my favorite anime 'mid' and it actually made sense

We were hanging out at my place last weekend and I put on the first episode of Trigun Stampede. I was hyping it up, saying how the animation was insane. He watched for like 10 minutes, then just shrugged and said 'It looks cool but the main guy is just doing the same edgy loner thing. It's kinda mid.' I got defensive at first, but later I realized he's right, a lot of new shows just copy old character types without adding anything. It made me question why I even like some of the stuff I watch. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple comment from someone totally changed how you see an anime?

My friend told me to skip the first 12 episodes of a show and I wish I hadn't

My buddy Mark, who's been into anime for a long time, told me to just start 'One Piece' from episode 13. He said the first dozen episodes were slow and the real story began after that. So I did it. I jumped right in, and I was totally lost. I had no idea who these people were or why they were together. The jokes fell flat because I didn't know their history. After three episodes of feeling confused, I went back and watched from the start. Those first 12 episodes set up everything. They made me care about the crew. Mark's advice came from a good place, but it was wrong for a new viewer. Has anyone else gotten bad skipping advice that ruined a show for them?
