I finally watched Death Note after years of hearing about it
Bought the whole box set for $80 because everyone said it was a must watch. Got through maybe 12 episodes before I realized the whole thing is just a chess match between two guys who talk to each other through a TV. That's it. That's the whole show. I kept waiting for something actually exciting to happen. Now I have a $80 paperweight on my shelf. Anyone else feel like they oversold this series?

The bit about "it's just a chess match between two guys who talk through a TV" is actually closer to the point than people want to admit. The show banks hard on intellectual showboating with zero payoff, like watching someone solve a sudoku for 37 episodes. I'd argue they undersold the boredom factor by making you think it was about a death god and a notebook with actual consequences instead of two dudes staring at monitors.

Nah, you're not wrong. A buddy of mine tried to get me into Death Note back in college, and I sat through maybe 15 episodes before I realized I was just watching two guys stroke their egos through a screen. The whole "genius battle" lost its charm real fast when it became clear nothing was ever going to actually happen except more scheming.
