I had to pick between watching the sub or the dub for my favorite anime and it almost ruined it for me

So I was about 20 episodes into this new show, and the sub had this one voice actor who just grated on my ears every time they spoke. I switched to the dub around episode 8, and the translation felt way off, like they were changing jokes and character names. I ended up sticking with the sub because the energy was better, but now I'm paranoid I missed some key plot details from the bad lip-syncing. Has anyone else had to make this call and regretted it later?

Honestly I used to think sub vs dub was no big deal and people were just being dramatic, but hearing you describe that voice actor issue and then the clunky translation totally changed my mind. It sounds like you were stuck between a bad performance and bad writing, which would wreck any show for me too. Did you ever go back and rewatch any scenes to see if you missed something from the lip sync?

Man I don't know, I feel like people blow this stuff way out of proportion. I've watched shows with terrible dubs and still had a good time because the story was solid. Lip sync issues? I barely notice unless someone points it out.
