My old anime forum archive from 2008 just vanished from my hard drive

It happened last week when my external drive just stopped showing up. I had saved hundreds of pages of old threads from a small forum about 'Gurren Lagann' and 'Code Geass' theories. I tried all the basic fixes, even took it to a shop in town, but the guy said the data was likely gone for good. It's weird how much of those early online chats about shows just disappears. Has anyone else managed to recover or find old backups of forums like that?

Man that's a real gut punch, sorry to hear it. The shop guy might be right about the drive, but the data could still be there. If you haven't tried it yet, look into data recovery software like Recuva before you give up. Those old forum archives are a total time capsule, it's a shame so much of that stuff just fades away.

Totally get what you mean about stuff fading away. Feels like we're losing bits of our own history all the time, not just old files. Makes you want to back up everything before it's just gone.

Ugh, my buddy lost years of music projects the same way. He tried some free software and actually got a bunch back. Feels like finding lost photos in an old house.
