Shoutout to the person who said to watch 'Serial Experiments Lain' with the lights off
I did it last night and got so creeped out I had to stop after two episodes, but I think I finally 'got' the atmosphere. Has anyone else had an anime's vibe completely change based on how you watched it?

That "got so creeped out" feeling is real. I watched the first half of Paranoia Agent on a bright laptop in a coffee shop and it just felt weird. Rewatched those same episodes alone at night and the tension was completely different, it actually got under my skin. The ambient noise around you totally changes how you process the audio design.

Two episodes of Lain in the dark was my limit too, that first time. It's wild how much the setting matters. Like @eric_price said about the audio, hearing those low hums and computer noises with no other sound around makes your brain fill in the scary parts. I tried watching Boogiepop Phantom on a sunny afternoon once and it just felt confusing and slow. Same show at midnight, with just the desk lamp on, and every shadow in my room felt like it was moving.
