Stumbled on a trick for finding old fansub groups that actually works

I was looking for a specific anime from the early 2000s that never got an official release, you know, one of those obscure OVAs. For weeks I was digging through dead torrent links and empty fan sites, getting nowhere. Then I remembered that old forums back then used to have sticky posts with group recommendation lists. I found a cached version of a 2004 AnimeSuki thread that had a whole breakdown of which sub groups had the best translation quality. Turns out, searching for "[group name] comparison" plus the year narrows it down way better than just the show title. I finally grabbed the episodes from a Mirc server that was still active, believe it or not. Has anyone else had luck pulling old releases from those ancient IRC channels?

Man @eric_price has to be careful with that. That chatroom is probably haunted by dial-up ghosts and pop-up ads for free iPods. Nothing says "wild" like downloading a 240p rip of Princess Mononoke over a 56k connection for three days straight. Just make sure your AOL buddy list doesn't suddenly include Totoro asking for your credit card info.
