The before and after of my friend's anime watch list over a decade

I met this guy at a con back in 2014 who only watched Naruto and Bleach. That was it, he had like 5 shows total. Fast forward to last week and he's got over 200 completed on his MAL, with genres I barely know exist. What got him was just one random recommendation to try Steins;Gate after he kept hearing about it. Now he's the one giving me recs. Anyone else have a friend that went from casual to deep dive in a short few years?

You mentioned it was "just one random recommendation" that got him into Steins;Gate, but I've seen that show recommended constantly for years now. It's hardly random, it's one of the most popular gateway shows out there. But I get what you mean - it's funny how one solid show can crack open the whole medium for someone. My own journey was similar but with Evangelion back in the late 90s. Before that I thought anime was just giant robots and weird jokes. Then one series showed me it could be deep and emotional and suddenly I was hunting down everything from Kino's Journey to Haibane Renmei. Some people need that one story that proves anime can be more than what they thought it was.

Think @the_joseph nailed it, one good show can totally flip someone's whole perspective.
