The way people say 'subbed vs dubbed' like it's a war is getting old

I was at a meetup in Austin last month and this guy spent 15 minutes explaining why dub watchers aren't 'real fans.' I've been watching anime since 2004 when fansubs were the only option on dial-up, and I switch between both depending on the show. Nobody talks about how bad some original Japanese voice acting can be, or how a good dub like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood actually improves scenes. Why do people act like there's one right way to enjoy a cartoon from another country? Has anyone else noticed this debate getting way too heated over something that's just personal preference?

Ten years at a con told me the best approach is just saying "cool, I watch both" and walking away when people start policing how others watch cartoons. Most of these debates just come from folks who need to feel superior about their hobby.

Right? The "cool, I watch both" line is basically a superpower at this point. It's like people forget we're all just here to enjoy the show.

Does anyone remember when fansubs would have those typos that actually made the dialogue better? I still think about "It's over 9000" and how that was just a translation mistake.
