Was sure I hated mecha anime until Gundam got me at 32
For like 15 years I rolled my eyes at any giant robot show. Figured it was just toy commercials with bad pacing. Then my buddy in Portland made me watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam last month, and I ate my words hard. The politics hit different when you realize the characters are basically kids in a messed up war, not just power fantasy pilots. What got me was the scene where Ami just wants to go home and nobody lets him, that felt real. I still skip most of the franchise's spinoffs, but I get the hype now. Anyone else flip on a genre they were sure they hated this late in the game?
