Went to the Anime Expo in LA last weekend and the manga booth lines were insane

I showed up at 10am on Saturday and the line for one popular publisher was already wrapped around the hall twice. People were camped out with chairs and snacks like they were waiting for concert tickets. I gave up after 45 minutes and just walked the artist alley instead. Is this normal for big cons now or did I just pick the worst possible time?

I mean, is it really that different from waiting for a limited release at Comic-Con or something? Maybe it's just me but I feel like the whole campout thing has been part of the con experience for years now, especially for the big booths with exclusive stuff.
