My oven door fell off at 375 degrees while I was baking cookies for my kid's class
Last Tuesday night I had two trays of chocolate chip cookies in the oven for my daughter's second grade party the next morning, and right when the timer hit 11 minutes the whole door just dropped off the hinges onto the floor with a huge bang. The spring on the bottom hinge snapped, and hot air rushed out everywhere while I stood there holding a mitt like an idiot. I ended up sliding the trays out with a spatula, propping the door back up with a stack of cookbooks, and finishing the last batch with the oven door basically taped shut. Somehow only three cookies got burnt, and the teacher said nothing the next day, but now I'm scared to use the oven at all. Has anyone here ever fixed a hinge spring on an old gas oven, or am I better off just buying a countertop one?
Man, that is my exact nightmare. Here's the thing nobody's mentioned yet: if that door dropped while the oven was hot, check the frame where the hinges bolt in, because the metal around those holes gets stressed and can crack, and then a new spring won't hold worth anything. Mine did that on an old Caloric and I ended up drilling out the holes and using slightly bigger bolts, which was a whole Saturday I'll never get back. Before you buy a countertop one, shine a flashlight at those hinge mounts and see if the steel is torn, that's the part that decides fix or toss.
