My sister in law told me my sourdough looked store bought and I almost quit baking
She came over for brunch in March and when I set my loaf on the table she goes 'oh, this looks like something from the grocery store,' and I stood there holding a bread knife with a 3 day old starter bubbling in the kitchen behind me. I laughed it off but later I tossed half a batch of dough in the trash because I figured what was the point. How do you all handle family members who don't get why a crust that took 4 hours means anything?
Oh man, that grocery store comment would've stung me too, especially after all that work. Here's what I keep coming back to though: did she actually mean it as an insult, or was she just clueless about what goes into a real loaf? Some people genuinely think "looks professional" is a compliment because they've never seen a crust with actual character. So my question for you is this, when she said it, did she say it with that fake nice voice or did she seem honestly impressed? Because that changes everything about how you handle her next time.
