My sourdough starter died after I forgot it in the fridge for 3 months

I opened my fridge last Sunday and found my jar of starter way in the back, covered in fuzzy gray mold. I tried to save it by scraping off the top and feeding it twice a day for a week, but nothing came back to life. It was a real bummer because I had that starter for over 2 years and named it Betty. Has anyone else had a starter kick the bucket and had to start from scratch?

Wait, did you try scraping off the mold and feeding it before it warmed up to room temp, or did you let it sit out first?

Two days ago I actually tried scraping mold off a sourdough starter and feeding it cold, and the thing basically just sat there looking sad for 12 hours. It ended up tasting like a weird mix of vinegar and regret, so idk maybe letting it warm up first is the real move here. Honestly at this point I’m half convinced mold is just the universe’s way of telling me to buy my bread from the store.
