My stand mixer's gear stripped out halfway through a double batch of bagels.
It happened last Saturday morning, right when the dough got really stiff. I had to finish kneading by hand for a solid 20 minutes, which was a huge pain. Has anyone else had a KitchenAid mixer fail like this, and is it worth fixing myself?

Honestly, is it even broken broken? Those things are tanks. Mine has made some awful noises for years and it just keeps going. Maybe it just needs a break, dough that stiff is asking a lot. I'd just use it on a lower speed next time and see if the problem comes back before taking it apart.

Yeah when you said yours makes awful noises for years, that's exactly what mine did. It started groaning like a dying animal whenever I tried to knead bread dough. I just stopped using it for a week, then tried a simple pizza dough on the lowest setting. It's been quiet ever since, @karen275. Sometimes they just get overworked and need to cool off.
