Shoutout to the church bake sale lady who called my cake 'interesting'

I brought a triple chocolate layer cake to St. Mary's fall fundraiser last Saturday and she said it was 'very interesting' after taking one bite. Now I always double check my baking soda is fresh before I start mixing - has anyone else had a batch fall flat because of expired leavening?

The first time I made a pineapple upside-down cake for a potluck I tested my baking powder by dropping a spoonful into hot water to see if it bubbled. That trick has saved me more times than I can count after I had a batch of muffins turn into hockey pucks once. Maybe give that a shot before you mix everything together next time, beats wondering what went wrong after the bake sale lady gives you the side-eye lol.
