I set up my drum kit in an empty parking garage at night and recorded a punk demo using just the voice memos app on my iPhone. The reverb was insane but I got a weird hollow thump from the concrete floor that ruined the kick drum sound. Has anyone else tried recording in weird spots and gotten a surprise sound you couldn't fix?
Set up my kit in the tiled bathroom with one sm57 on the kick and one hanging from the shower curtain rod. Ended up with this fluttery reverb that made every hit sound like someone was clapping back at me from the toilet. Anyone else accidentally create some bizarre room tone they couldn't get rid of?
I was sure that lo-fi drum machine track was just another bedroom mess, but I went back and listened with headphones. The way that snare cut through the static made me realize I'd been confusing "rough" with "lazy" for years. Has anyone else been fooled by a recording that sounded bad at first but turned out to be intentional?
