Backup tape hissed over the whole chorus, we kept it anyway

Recording at my buddy's place in Portland last April and the Tascam 4-track decided to eat the good reel right before we hit the drums. We only had one take of the song since the singer was leaving town the next day, so we spliced what we could and left this loud hiss bleeding into the chorus. Listened back in his car and honestly it sounded kinda haunted, like the tape was part of the band. We put it on the demo and a local DJ actually asked about it, thought it was an intentional effect. Anyone else ever keep a screwup on a final mix because it made the song better?

Changed my whole view on that. Used to be a perfectionist about every take, would redo stuff until it was sterile and clean, you know, boring. But hearing about your tape hiss, it clicked for me. That kind of noise is not a mistake, it is a memory of the room, the gear, the moment. Kept a bad guitar buzz on a track last year for the same reason, it felt like the song was alive instead of a plastic toy. Now I listen for the weird stuff first. That is where the character lives.
