Cheap compressor trick fixed my muddy vocal take

I was tracking vocals in my closet with a $40 dynamic mic and everything sounded like it was underwater. Then I tried running the mic through my old bass amp's compressor pedal instead of the interface plugin. It pulled the low end up way cleaner than I expected, and the take sat in the mix like it was recorded in a real room. Anyone else using random guitar or bass pedals for unexpected fixes like this?
