Drum mic trick that saved our basement recordings

We spent months fighting with muddy kick drum sound, tried every placement you see on YouTube. Then our bass player just taped a cheap PZM mic to the inside of the kick shell and ran it through an old guitar amp preamp. That gave us this punchy attack without any EQ fighting. Has anyone else pulled off a weird hack like that with gear that costs under $30?
