I finally listened to my dad's studio advice and it saved my mix
My dad played in bar bands in the 80s and kept telling me to record everything with the gain way lower than I thought. I always cranked it thinking louder = better. Last month I tried his method, kept peaks around -12 dB, and suddenly my vocals didn't sound like a blown speaker. Anyone else get mixing advice from an older musician that actually worked?

Heard similar stuff from this old sound guy who used to run monitors for like... southern rock covers bands in the 90s. Told me to stop trying to "fix it in the mix" and just get the source right first. Changed my whole approach honestly.
