My band spent $600 on a "real" studio demo and our $0 basement tape blew it away
Back in 2003 my band drove from Akron to Cleveland and dropped $600 at a studio for four hours of tracking, and the guy kept rushing us because another band had the room at 6. We brought home a clean, flat demo that sounded like nobody was even in the room. Two weeks later we set up in my parents' basement with one Radio Shack mic hanging from a bike hook and ran the whole thing to a cassette deck, and that tape got us three bar gigs while the fancy one got zero callbacks. I know everyone says you need a real studio to be taken serious, but for a garage band I think the room and the energy matter more than the gear. Anybody else got a cheap tape that beat the expensive one, or am I just fooling myself here?
