My Tascam 4-track ate a demo tape mid-bounce, so I tried freezing it and it actually worked
Two nights ago I was bouncing a 6 song demo for my buddy's band onto my old Tascam 424 when the tape got chewed up about 40 seconds in. I panicked because it was the only copy of the drum tracks, so I stuck the cassette in the freezer for about 3 hours (read this trick somewhere years back) and then carefully wound it back with a pencil. Got the tape to play again and pulled the drums off into my interface, but the pitch wobbled on the last verse. Anyone else had luck saving a chewed tape, or should I just tell bands to record drums straight to digital from now on?
Freezing works but it's a band aid, not a fix. That pitch wobble is the tape stretching when it got yanked, and no amount of cold brings that back. Tapes are fun until they eat your only copy, so I'd track drums clean to digital and keep the Tascam for the vibe stuff where a lost take won't wreck you.
