PSA: I thought recording on a phone was total garbage, then I heard 4 tracks from a guy in Akron

I spent years saying you need a real interface and a Shure SM57 pointed at a cab to get anything worth hearing. A guy in Akron posted 4 tracks last month that he did completely on an old Samsung with a $20 lav mic taped to a broom handle. I almost scrolled past, but the second song had this room sound on the drums that I could not figure out. He said he recorded the kit by putting the phone on a pillow in the hallway with the door cracked. I tried that setup with my own band in the basement and got a snare that sounds like someone slapping a wet phone book. So now I'm stuck between admitting his thing works and trying to figure out why mine doesn't. What phone or cheap mic setups have actually worked for you guys?
