That $12 thrift store cassette 4-track turned out legit after 6 months
I grabbed a Tascam Porta 02 from a pawn shop in Dayton for $12 back in March, mostly as a joke because the belt looked shot. After replacing the belt for $8 and cleaning the heads with isopropyl, I ran a bass line through it and the tape saturation actually added something my digital interface never gave me. I spent two weekends just recording drum loops at 1 7/8 IPS and the way the cymbals smear is honestly inspiring, not muddy like I thought it would be. My old skepticism was tied to believing cheaper means worse, but this thing has character that no plugin has matched yet. Anyone else had a beat-up piece of gear that surprised you once you fixed it up, or am I just chasing nostalgia with extra steps?
