That demo we 'fixed' in 2003 sounded better before the cleanup
I was digitizing old cassettes from my band's practice space in Akron last month, and the rough mixes we called 'broken' actually had this raw drum bleed and amp hum that made them feel alive. We spent 3 weekends trying to re-record clean versions for a local compilation, but the producer kept saying the timing was off, so we gated everything and overdubbed bass. Now I hear those originals and wonder if we killed the soul chasing 'professional' sound. Is the raw, flawed take always more honest, or does polish actually help a demo get heard? Has anyone else gone back and liked the unmastered version better?
