That one drummer who recorded the snare with a plastic bucket, and honestly it works

We were cutting demos in a garage near Akron last winter and our drummer showed up without his kit because his car got towed. He grabbed a 5 gallon bucket from the corner, taped a mic to it, and played the whole session on that thing with some brushes. The track sounded like a weird lo-fi heartbeat but it actually fit the song better than his real snare would have. I keep thinking about that whenever I hear overly polished drum sounds on basement tapes. Has anyone else stumbled onto a trash gear hack that became a permanent part of the sound?

Wait, you taped a mic to a bucket? That's a new one on me. I used to think you needed decent gear to get a usable sound, but honestly I've seen the opposite happen so many times now. A buddy of mine recorded a whole EP with a cracked cymbal and a pillowcase over the kick drum, and it had way more character than the studio version we did later with proper stuff. Limits force you to work with what's there, and sometimes that's exactly what the song needs. I'm glad you kept that take, those kind of accidents are usually the ones you can't recreate on purpose.
