DAE change their mind about fanfic after reading a 400k word slow burn that took 2 weeks to get good?
I used to think fanfic was all rushed junk until my friend in Portland sent me a 400,000 word Harry Potter slow burn that didn't even get the two main characters in the same room until chapter 30. I stuck with it because the writing was so good, and by the time they finally held hands at a train station in chapter 41 I actually yelled at my phone, so now I get why people say the wait is the whole point. What is the longest slow burn you almost gave up on before it hit you hard?
The "wait is the whole point" thing hit me when I read a 300k Steve/Bucky fic that kept them apart for like 60 chapters. Every single chapter was them missing each other in these tiny ways, a jacket left behind, a song on the radio, stuff that seemed like nothing at the time. I almost bailed around chapter 25 because I wanted them to just TALK already. Then chapter 60 hit and they finally saw each other across a crowded room and I had to put my phone down and walk around my apartment. The slow parts are doing work even when it feels like nothing is happening, that's what I learned.
