Hot take: I judged slow burn stories by chapter 3 for 2 years and a comment on a 400k word fic called me out
I used to bail on any story that didn't hook me in the first 10 minutes, and I was weirdly proud of it. Then someone replied to my comment on a 400k word fic and asked why I was even reading slow burns if I wanted instant payoff. That one reply hit hard because they were right, I was reading the wrong genre and blaming the writers. So I tried an experiment for 3 months: no dropping anything before chapter 15, and I kept a note of every time I almost quit versus how I felt at the end. Out of 11 stories I stuck with, 8 ended up on my all time list, and most of the ones I almost quit at chapter 4 or 5 are now the ones I reread the most. The slow parts weren't filler, they were the setup doing its job while I sat there being impatient. Now I want to know, what chapter count do you personally give a slow burn before you decide it's not for you?
