Rant: The $40 library used book sale haul that made me finally get why slow burns work
I hit the used book sale at the library in Davenport last month and walked out with a stack of old doorstops for 40 bucks total. One of them was a 700 page family saga from the 70s that took me almost 200 pages to care about a single person in it, and then I couldn't put it down. It got me thinking that the long posts I stick with on here work the same way, they just pile up small details until you're hooked without even noticing. The cheap paperback gamble paid off, but now I'm wondering how many of you give a story that many pages to win you over before you bail.
