The 400 page webnovel that dragged vs the 400 page one that flew by, pacing is everything
I read two long-form stories back to back this summer, both around 400 chapters on Royal Road. One spent 30 chapters on a single day at a market fair, and I nearly quit twice. The other covered a whole war in 10 chapters but still made every side character matter. How do you all judge a slow burn, is it about word count per event or how much the world changes between plot points? I feel like the second one kept me hooked because the author knew when to speed up and when to sit in a moment, but some folks swear the first kind is the true slow burn. Which camp are you in, and can you name a story that nailed it for you?

But is it really a slow burn if nothing meaningful changes, or is that just stalling? I think a lot of folks confuse "slow" with "detailed" and end up defending filler. That war story you mentioned sounds like it earned its fast pace because the author could give you a full character arc in two paragraphs instead of fifty. Meanwhile, the market fair thing sounds like someone fell in love with their own worldbuilding and forgot the story needs to move. A good rule I follow is simple: if you could skip ten chapters and not miss the point, that's not pacing, that's padding. When the world shifts under the characters' feet, even a quick scene feels heavy, and that's the balance that keeps me reading.
