Debate: Should hand drafters learn CAD or stick with pencil? Here's where I landed.
I spent 8 hours on a site plan last week using nothing but a .5mm mechanical pencil. My buddy did the same job in 45 minutes with AutoCAD. But here's the thing: my final plan had better line weight control. His looked... flat. So which skill actually matters more when you're just starting out? I'm leaning toward both but curious what others think.

The real edge nobody talks about is how fast you can sketch ideas in the field with a pencil when a client points at something and asks "what if we moved it here?" CAD can't match that instant feedback loop, and that's where you win trust before a single line gets digitized. So learn both, but keep the pencil in your pocket for the conversations that actually land you the job.

That buddy of yours with AutoCAD probably spent a month learning the software before he got fast. I remember my first CAD project in school where I accidentally deleted a whole layer and spent an hour crying over it. Pencil never does that to you. But the REAL lesson I got was from an old architect who told me to sketch over my CAD prints by hand to add texture and shadow. That hybrid approach saved my butt more times than I can count. So yeah, keep that mechanical pencil handy but don't pretend the computer is useless.
