Found a blog last week that actually explains why my roof vents keep icing up in winter

Been fighting ice dams on my own house for 3 winters now. Tried more insulation, different soffit vents, even a heated cable that cost me $200. Nothing worked. Then I stumbled on this blog called 'Attic Science' run by some guy in Minnesota who actually measures air pressure in attics instead of just guessing. He had this whole post with infrared photos showing how baffles get crushed during insulation installs. Checked my attic and sure enough, 2 of my baffles were completely flattened. Fixed them 4 days ago and already seeing way less ice buildup. Anyone else find a niche blog that solved a problem you were banging your head against for years?

That "your mileage may vary" line is the real takeaway here. I've seen people swear by blogs like this and others who had the same bad luck as you. It really depends on how your specific house was built and what kind of shape it's in. Most of the time these blogs are a good starting point, but they're not a replacement for someone who can actually put eyes on your attic.

I actually had the opposite experience with that blog. I followed his advice and crushed my own baffles trying to fix them, and then ended up with a bigger ice dam problem because I didn't seal the drywall gaps he also mentioned. His infrared photos are nice but they don't show the whole picture - my attic was built in 1989 with a weird truss system that his generic fix doesn't account for. I spent $150 on foam baffles and a weekend of work only to have my roof leak in February. Your mileage may vary for sure, but I think these niche blogs oversimplify something that really needs a local roofer who can see your specific setup.
