Rant: Why does every "hidden gem" blog post just list the same 5 sites?

I've been trying to find actually obscure blogs lately, but every listicle I click on just mentions things like Reddit or Wikipedia like they're the underground secret of the century. Last night I found a blog called "The Pallet Rack Observer" that's literally just one guy documenting warehouse shelving failures in Ohio, and that's the kind of niche stuff I'm looking for. Am I just searching wrong, or does anyone else have a real method for digging up these tiny passion projects?

Wait, The Pallet Rack Observer sounds exactly like the kind of rabbit hole I waste hours on, why can't these blog posts ever find stuff like that? It's brutal how every "hidden gem" list is just the same SEO junk from 2010 recycled with a new header. I usually just scroll random webrings or old blogrolls from the early 2000s to find the real weird stuff.

Old webrings are the real goldmine, no doubt about it. I found a site about someone's collection of vintage parking meters that way, and it had a whole five page essay on the history of parking enforcement in the 1970s. @hayden_rodriguez reminds me of that time I clicked through a webring for "odd hobbies" and ended up in a personal shrine to a guy's cat from 1998 that he still updates monthly. You just don't get that kind of dedication from any SEO driven list. Those old blogrolls are like a time capsule of someone's actual weird interests, not what a content farm thinks is weird. Have we just given up on letting people be genuinely strange online?
