Spent $80 on a blog theme that looked great but killed my loading speed

I bought a fancy theme for my small book review blog six months ago. It looked amazing in the demo, but once I installed it, my page speed score dropped to 12 out of 100. I tried for weeks to fix it with caching plugins and image compression, but nothing worked. I finally had to scrap it and start over with a simpler design, losing all that money and time. Has anyone else had a theme that completely wrecked their site's performance?

Switched to a basic theme and my speed doubled.
