That blog about fixing old cast iron skillets broke my brain last week

I found this tiny blog called "Rusty Pan Revival" that only had like 12 subscribers and the author claimed you should never use steel wool on vintage cast iron, just salt and oil. So I tried it on my grandma's old skillet from 1964 that was basically a crusty mess. Three hours of scrubbing with salt and my arm felt like it was going to fall off, and the pan still had gunk in the corners. I gave up and used steel wool anyway, got it clean in 15 minutes flat. Now I feel like I wasted a Sunday afternoon following advice from some random person who probably never actually cooked with a rusty pan. Has anyone else run into a blog that made you do something way harder than it needed to be?

and honestly @brian303 that's the part that gets me, if the blog had said add a little water to make a paste the salt mightve actually done something. Ive seen people swear by dry salt scrubs for removing rust but that only works on light surface rust, not 50 years of burnt on food and grease. My grandma's pan was basically a science experiment at that point, no way salt alone was gonna cut through it. The whole time I was scrubbing I kept thinking, this is what people did before steel wool existed and they probably just accepted pans looking rough.

Did that blog mention anything about adding water to the salt scrub?
