I used to think book club picks should always be new releases
For years, I pushed for our group to read only books published in the last 12 months. I thought it kept things fresh. But last month, we read 'The Remains of the Day' from 1989, and the discussion was the best we've had in ages. People brought in old reviews, talked about how views on the story have changed, and shared personal memories from when it first came out. It gave us so much more to talk about than just the plot. Now I see that mixing in older books gives a richer debate. Has your club found a good balance between new and classic titles?

What's your club's oldest pick so far?

My buddy drafted a 37-year-old kicker once.

Nah I actually DISAGREE, new releases keep things relevant and people actually show up because nobody wants to slog through some dusty old classic they already read in high school. The whole point of a book club is to stay current and have shared stakes in what's being talked about right NOW.
