Appreciation post for the retired librarian who called me out at our book club meetup last month

At the downtown Seattle public library book club, a retired librarian straight up told me I was 'overthinking the symbolism' in the second chapter of The Road. She pointed out that Cormac McCarthy probably just described the ash because it was cold and gray, not some deep metaphor. It made me realize I spend too much time hunting for hidden meanings when the story works fine on its own. Do you guys ever get told you're reading too much into a book by someone in your group?

Our book club hated 'The Midnight Library' and I think they missed the whole point

I picked it for our August meeting because I loved the multiverse idea. But 9 out of 11 people said it was too cheesy and the message was shallow. One guy said it was 'self-help wrapped in fiction.' I get that the writing isn't literary genius, but the whole point is about regret and choice. I walked away feeling like people judged it for being popular instead of actually engaging with the story. Did your club ever trash a book just because it was a bestseller?

Bought a fancy bookmark that cost me $30 and it ruined my reading experience

I got this leather bookmark with a built in magnifying glass from a bookstore in Austin. Thought it would be cool for reading small print in those old paperback editions. First week it scratched the cover of my favorite novel because the metal edge stuck out. Second week the magnifying glass fell out and I stepped on it. Now I just use a piece of scrap paper I got from the library. Total waste of thirty bucks and it made me miss an entire chapter of my book club pick. Has anyone else bought a gimmick accessory that actually made reading harder instead of easier?

Read the first page of a mystery novel where the dog was the killer and it made me question clue placement

Was browsing a used bookstore in Portland last Saturday and flipped through a random crime novel. On page 3, the guy's golden retriever had a piece of torn fabric in its mouth. I laughed out loud and immediately knew the dog did it. Finished the whole book in two days. The author literally hid the clue in plain sight under a couch cushion. It got me thinking about how we debate foreshadowing in book club. Has anyone else read a book where the author was way too obvious with clues?

Hot take: I was dead wrong about audiobooks counting as reading

Our book club had this huge debate last year about whether audiobooks really count. I was on the side saying no way, it's not real reading. Then I injured my wrist in March and couldn't hold a physical book for six weeks. I caved and tried the Libby app with a nonfiction pick about the collapse of the Roman Empire. After finishing the whole 14 hour thing while driving and doing dishes, I realized I remembered more details than when I read the print version. My retention was actually better because I couldn't zone out or skip paragraphs. So now I'm the one who has to defend audiobooks every meeting. Has anyone else in here done a complete 180 on something you were super stubborn about?

My book club in Portland chose "The Last Resort" for our August meeting, and on page 50 I already knew half the members would hate it... the ending made people so mad that three members actually walked out before the discussion was over. Has anyone else ever had a book pick cause that much drama in their group?

Can we talk about the time book club fell apart over a single chapter?

Last month at my public library in Austin, our book club got stuck debating chapter 7 of The Overstory for almost two hours. One person insisted it was the core of the whole book, but another said it ruined the pacing and they hated the character arc. I tried to steer us back to the main themes, but people got so heated that 3 members actually left early. Eventually I just called a vote to move on, and half the group agreed. Remember when book clubs actually finished a book in time?

I used to be in a book club that met every month but nobody ever read the whole thing. We spent half the time apologizing and the other half guessing plot points. Then I suggested we try the "two chapters a week" approach instead of the whole book at once. We set up a group chat where we posted short thoughts after each chunk. It worked way better and we actually finished 8 books in 6 months. Has anyone else found a system that keeps people reading instead of making excuses?

I finally made it to Powell's Books last weekend after hearing people rave about it for years. Spent two hours wandering around and honestly, the layout is a mess. Half the shelves were blocked by people sitting on the floor reading, and I couldn't find a single thing in the mystery section. Am I missing something or is it just a big used bookstore with good marketing?

Just found out most book clubs pick the same 20 books over and over

I was scrolling through a reading stats site called BookBrowse last night. Turns out over 60% of book clubs choose from a pool of like 20 bestsellers. The Nightingale, Where the Crawdads Sing, Educated. Same ones every time. Our club has done three of those in two years. Are we just lazy or does everyone else stick to the safe picks too? What's a hidden gem your club actually debated hard?

We usually wrap up discussions in like an hour. But last month someone brought up how the kid represents blind optimism in a dead world. Half the room said he's just naive and the dad was being selfish dragging him along. The other half said the kid was the only reason to keep going. The week our book club fell apart over a single chapter

Last Tuesday the whole thing went sideways. We were supposed to discuss chapter 12 of this literary novel about a family farm, but three people showed up having only read the first five chapters. One lady started defending the main character's bad choices because of something that happens on page 87. Another guy kept interrupting to talk about the weather metaphors that aren't even there until chapter 15. I sat there for 45 minutes trying to hold it all together. By the end, someone said we needed a rule about page minimums before meetings. Has anyone else had a meeting where nobody agreed what they even read?

Switched to audiobooks for our club picks and the debates got way better

I used to read every book for our club on paper, but that meant I often skimmed the last 50 pages just to finish on time. Then around 6 months ago I tried listening to one on my commute, and I actually caught more details because I couldn't zone out. Now I do audiobooks for almost all our picks, and I notice things like foreshadowing and character voices that I missed before. The downside is I can't flip back to check a quote during a debate, but I started keeping quick voice notes on my phone. TIL my book club read 52 books in one year and I didn't even notice

I joined a local book club about 8 months ago. We meet every other Thursday at the library downtown. I thought we were just casually picking titles. Then at our last meeting someone counted up our total from January through December. Turns out we finished 52 books. That's one per week. I barely noticed because we rotate between short novels, poetry collections, and nonfiction. None of us set out to hit that number. Has anyone else's group hit a milestone they didn't plan for?
