My book club almost split in half over a 3 page passage in 'The Great Gatsby'
Last month at our meeting in Portland, we spent two hours arguing whether Gatsby was actually in love with Daisy or just obsessed with her status. Half the room thought he was a hopeless romantic, the other half called it toxic fixation. How do you handle it when a book debate gets personal like that?

I've been in book clubs where the "hopeless romantic" versus "toxic fixation" debate got heated, and it helps to ask people to cite specific lines rather than just defending their position. You can usually find middle ground by acknowledging that Gatsby's longing is real but also recognizing how much of it is tied to her social standing and what she represents. If tensions run high, just table the deeper argument and agree to disagree, because the goal is enjoying the discussion, not winning it.

Gatsby's longing is real" - and so is my longing to finish a book club discussion without accidentally starting a fight.
