My book club split on 'Project Hail Mary' - did the humor help or hurt?

In our last meeting, half the group loved the funny parts in Andy Weir's book while the other half said it made the science feel less serious. I was in the middle until I reread chapter 4 where he figures out the alien language, and the jokes actually made me remember the details better. Anyone else have a book where the tone divided your group like this?
