Our book club almost split in half over whether to DNF a book at page 50, and I'm still not over it
So this went down at our meeting two weeks ago at my place in Boise, and I'm still thinking about it. We had picked this 600 page historical novel that everyone voted on back in March, and by the time we sat down, only 4 of the 9 of us had actually finished it. My friend Rachel said she bailed at page 50 because the first chapter was all description with no plot, and she wanted us to make a rule that if half the group DNFs, we drop the book. Then Greg got weirdly heated and said finishing the book is the whole point, and that's when people started picking sides. I tried to keep it light (I even brought cookies, which did nothing) but we spent 40 minutes arguing about rules instead of the actual book. We ended up doing a 5 to 4 vote to keep it, and now I'm worried half the group is gonna show up to next time having skimmed it just to avoid the fight. How do you all handle a book that most people can't get through? Do you have a page limit rule or do you just power through and hope?
