Our book club tried to discuss 'Ulysses' and it was a total disaster
Last month my book club picked James Joyce's 'Ulysses' because someone said it would be a fun challenge. Big mistake. I got maybe 30 pages in before I was totally lost, and by our meeting night only 2 out of 8 people had finished even half of it. We spent the whole hour just arguing about whether the book was genius or just a mess. Someone pulled up a YouTube summary and we watched that instead of talking about it. I felt kind of bad because I really wanted to like it, but honestly it was a huge failure for our group. Has anyone else had a book pick that just completely bombed like that?

Did anyone actually admit they just picked it for the bragging rights?

Would they even be honest about it if they did?

And they definitely wouldn't say "yeah, I just wanted to look important." I once had a neighbor who bragged about a club membership for months before admitting he'd only been there once.
