Pro tip: A friend in my Seattle book club told me my discussion questions were too safe

She said I kept asking 'what did you think of the ending' for every single book. Made me realize I was playing it way too safe. Now I write three specific questions per book, like 'would this character have made different choices in 2024' or 'what's one line you'd cut'. Changed the whole vibe of our meetings. Anyone else get called out for lazy book club habits?

Honestly, it's just a book club. Getting grilled over your questions sounds a bit much.

What's the point of a book club if you're not going to dig into the book? A good discussion needs real questions, not just everyone saying they liked it. Getting challenged on your take makes you actually think. Otherwise we're just having a nice chat, and I can do that anywhere.
