Spent $80 on a fancy book club hardcover and the discussion notes were just printed from Wikipedia
Found out three other members already had the same edition with the exact same appendix, so I basically paid for a book I could have borrowed for free, has anyone else gotten burned by a special edition that added nothing?

Bought a "limited edition" thinking it would hold value. Sold it on eBay for $12. Turns out everybody prints the same fluff these days.

Agreed with this honestly. I used to think special editions were worth it for the extras and the feeling of having something unique. But after I dropped $50 on a "collector's edition" of a fantasy novel and the only bonus was a map that was literally just a low res copy of the one in the paperback, I totally changed my mind. The author even admitted in a Q&A that the publisher just threw in whatever they had lying around. Now I just grab the library copy and if I really love it I'll buy a used hardcover later.
