We hit 40 members and the cake debate got vicious

Our little club crossed 40 people last month and suddenly everyone has opinions about the perfect ending. Last week someone brought a store bought sheet cake for our discussion on The Goldfinch and a retired teacher went OFF about how homemade is the only way. I thought we were all here for the books, not the baked goods, but now we have two factions planning separate snacks for next meetup. Has anyone else had a milestone turn into a weird turf war like this?

Is it weird that I used to roll my eyes at people who got this heated over snacks, but now I get it a little? I always figured the book was the whole point, you know, like the cake was just filler. Then our group hit 35 and someone brought those fancy little cupcakes from that bakery downtown, and the next meeting the homemade crowd showed up with a whole carrot cake from scratch. I was team store-bought for so long, but honestly, the homemade one had that crumbly top and the frosting tasted like real butter, and now I'm the one side-eyeing the plastic container. It's not about the recipe, it's about the effort, and once you taste that difference, it's hard to go back to the sheet cake.
